Simmons was first elected to be the national committeewoman for the Republican Party of Nebraska in 2012 and was re-elected to serve a four-year term in 2016.[3][4][1]

Resignation

Simmons resigned from her position on December 11, 2017. She said she resigned to protest the Republican National Committee's (RNC) finanical support of Roy Moore in the 2017 special election for the U.S. Senate seat from Alabama.[2] Nine women made sexual misconduct and assault allegations against Moore in mid-November. The RNC announced on November 15, 2017, that it was withdrawing from a funding agreement it had with the Moore campaign.[5] The RNC reinstated its funding agreement with Moore, however, after President Donald Trump (R) endorsed him on December 4.[6]In a statement, Simmons said:

I strongly disagree with the recent RNC financial support directed to the Alabama Republican Party for use in the Roy Moore race. There is much I could say about this situation, but I will defer to this weekend's comments by Senator Shelby. I will miss so many of you that I knew well; and wish I could have continued my service to the national Republican Party that I used to know well.[2][7]
