Montana Campaign Finance Law Revision, I-118 (1994)
The Montana campaign Finance Law Revision Initiative, also known as I-118, was on the November 8, 1994 ballot in Montana as an initiated state statute, where it was approved. The measure limited contributions to candidates for public office, prohibited carryover of surplus campaign funds, restricted contributions to elected officials' leadership political committees and included in-kind contributions within aggregate limits for contributions by political committees to state legislative candidates.[1][2]
Aftermath
A lawsuit had been ongoing concerning whether or not Montana's campaign finance limits are unconstitutionally low, as alleged by the plaintiffs. A 2017 court ruling upheld the contribution limits and attorney James Bopp Jr. appealed to the Supreme Court. On January 14, 2019, the Supreme Court declined to hear the case.[3][4]
